On Christmas Day in the morning

Remember the carol? “I saw three ships come sailing by…on Christmas Day in the morning.” Actually, today is Christmas Eve, but I want to tell you about the quilt on our bed which I bring out each Christmas season.

I Saw Three Ships (Christmas quilt)

This quilt is made mainly of Christmas fabrics left over from other projects.

I began with the largest scraps first, making the big house blocks (one of the “houses” is a church). Next were the star blocks, working down to smaller pieces for the remaining fillers. The central section features “Seattle Sails” by Marsha McCloskey, which appears in A Banner Year by Nancy Martin. Hence the title of the quilt:  I Saw Three Ships. Layout took a lot of time & planning to make everything fit together attractively.  And it took a lot of looking to find a suitable border fabric which would blend with the colors but not detract from the design elements.

Merry Christmas to you & your family! (It’s five degrees below zero this morning.)
