We were asked to bring a yard of “what was I thinking” fabric (otherwise translated “ugly)” to the guild meeting last week. In small groups we tore & shared pieces as the leader instructed. I ended up with eight pieces, ranging from half yard to eighth yard, & none of the fabric I started with.
First I cut the fabrics into 2 1/2 inch strips. In my opinion, the best way to mix fabrics that don’t go together, is with a lot of white or a lot of black background. I went to EQ7 & drew up a plan I titled “Dashes & Dots,” then rummaged through my scraps for odds & ends of whites & neutrals.
Here’s my first block, with sashing attached.
I proceeded to cut all the pieces, then sewed them together into forty some blocks–& had them all backward but three! So rather than ripit, ripit, ripit, I reversed my quilt plan & kept going. A dark red border provided an attractive finish.

As usual, you made a silk purse out of the sow’s ear!
